Augemented Reality is at the ARCore of Android’s future

ARCore is out!

In the summer of 2016 PokemonGo opened up pandora’s box for augmented reality (AR).  The app was an instant hit around the world.  While it’s user base has certainly declined since then, nearly two years later it still has a constant demand.  Unfortunately, Pokemon are not the topic of this article (I could write some pretty good ones!). Instead we’ll focus on another stride in AR that took place earlier this week; Google’s release of ARCore.

On February 23rd Google officially released v1.0 of ARCore available on over 100 million Android devices.  Individual developers can now design and publish their AR-based apps on the Play Store, and this only means that AR is going to become even more prevalent in our everyday lives. Speaking of Developer, if you are interested in becoming a developer you should check out my new Android developer course on Phonlabteachable.com

Compatible Phones:

While the list of phones is limited at the moment, you can experience this new wave of AR if you have one of the following phones:

  • Pixel/XL
  • Pixel 2/XL
  • Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus
  • Note 8
  • Galaxy S7/S7 Edge
  • LG V30/30+
  • Asus Zenfone AR
  • OnePlus 5 /5T

ARCore is certainly not the first AR software to get into the hands of developers (Apple’s ARKit and Unity’s Vuforia), but it still marks a significant step towards AR becoming the norm on every device.  Google has said they are partnering with many manufacturers this year to enable AR in upcoming devices.  The bottom line: AR is here to stay.

AR’s Implications

As a developer myself AR is a beautiful thing because it empowers us to create more immersive experiences that can connect with other people.  You’ll often hear gamer’s say that gaming is an art form that encompasses many others.  Video games are an interactive visual and audio experience that can invoke feelings just like any other art if the story is told correctly.  AR only creates more opportunities for this to happen, so it’s not surprising that most of the successful AR apps right now are video games.

But of course AR has much more use than just as a gaming feature.  Industry giants like Amazon have already began releasing their personal touches.  Amazon has utilized ARKit for a few months on iOS, and ARCore is now available on Android phones so that users can visualize what products will look like in their homes before ever purchasing.  Google also partnered with Snap to create a virtual tour of Barcelona’s famous Camp Nou soccer stadium.  I think it’s safe to say every tech giant in the world is thinking about either how they can incorporate AR, or what impact it’s going to have on their future.  Even outside of tech a lot of other industries are gearing up for change as well.

With so many new reality technologies emerging, its an exciting time to be either a developer or a user.  And with all this buzz about AR, let’s not forget that the end of the spectrum exists with products like the Vive containing fully immersive VR worlds.  These differ from AR in that 100% of your surroundings are computer generated, not just a portion.  There’s certainly a spectrum of how immersive AR can be.  If we put reality on one end and VR on the other, AR is everything that falls in between.

What do you think the future holds for the immersive computing spectrum?  Let us know in the comments below.

 Google Home

google-home-1

Google Home is a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Ask it questions. Tell it to do things. It’s your own Google, always ready to help. Just start with, “Ok Google”.  This device is Googles attempt to compete with The Amazon Echo powered by alexa and I think Google is going to brings some stiff competition. Google Home can automate many task around your house, here are some examples.

Alarm, Calculator, Calendar, Delight, Dictionary, Easter eggs, Facts & Info, Finance, Flight information, Games, IFTTT, Learn more, Light control, Local guide, Mobile app audio streaming, Multi-room audio, Music, My day, News, Nutrition, Podcasts, Radio, Shopping list, Smart plugs and switch control, Speaker streaming and control, Sports, Thermostat control, Timer, Traffic, Translation, TV streaming and control, & Weather
I am really looking forward to getting at least 3 Google Home device in my home and start the conversation with Google. If you are interesting in this kind of home automation then you can pre-order Google Home HERE

Google Home WIFI

home-wifi

Google’s new home wifi device was also announced in the Key Note. Home WIFI from Google can be paired up with as many Home WIFI routers as need to create the coverage you need for from house.  you can control these routers with a simple app. The Google Wifi app gives you total control over your network. Easily share your Wi-Fi password, see what devices are online, and prioritize them for better performance. Google Wifi’s family controls allow you to pause the signal to your children’s devices, like at bedtime or dinnertime. Google Home WIFI isnt available at yet but should becoming later this year so keep a look out. I am planning on picking up 3 of them for amazing coverage in my home as soon as they become available.

Chromecast Ultra

chromecastg-ultra

The Chromecast Ultra stream up to 4K Ultra HD & HDR picture quality over your WiFi network with Chromecast Ultra, a streaming device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port. Chromecast Ultra provides fast, reliable performance with minimal buffering and smoother streaming. you can also use your iPhone®, iPad®, Android device, or laptop to stream thousands of Cast-enabled apps. If you loved last years model of chromecast then you will love this one with better hardware and 4K video. Google currently has this device marked as Coming Soon so check it out HEREI do think that at $69.99 it is priced a little high but I am sure Google will drop the price in a couple months down to 50 bucks and that will be the time to pick up a couple. If you dont need 4k you can still pick up the Normal Chromecast for just $35.

Daydream View

screenshot-330

Daydream View is a VR headset and controller by Google that lets you explore new worlds, kick back in your personal VR cinema, and play games that put you at the center of action. This is Google’s take on VR headset I and really like it. I have owned a couple Samsung VR headsets and while they are fun for a while they are a little uncomfortable. The fact that Google made the Daydream View out of mostly fabrics is really nice and the included controller implementation looks sick. Now that Google is entering the realm of VR I am really excited to see where they will take us. If you pre-order a Google Pixel then you will get a email to claim a free Daydream View and I for one cant wait to play with mine. Google Custom Live Cases

Google also just announced 2 new products just a couple days ago.  The Photos Live Case and Places Live Case are custom designed by you.  I am not sure how well these cases protect your phone but the idea of being able to design your own case picture is really awesome. I order a Photos live case and once i get it in the mail i will report on the quality a little more then. Google Store has also included in the design tools some cool filters you can a apply to the case to help with design. Check these new cases out for yourself at the links above.  The cases are a bit high priced in my opinion at $35.99 but if you really want a custom and awesome looking case it may still be a good chose for you.
